China , Ornaments & Breakables

  • Before packing the carton, place a layer of screwed up paper in the base of the carton, this is to give your items a little more protection. Now place the strong or heavier china evenly across the bottom, then lay another layer of china, continue this procedure until the carton is almost full then lay another layer of screwed up paper across the top and then seal up the carton with packing tape and mark on the box. Each piece of china should be wrapped separately.
  • Plates should be packed on top of each other with a sheet of wrapping paper between each plate. Place the largest plate at the bottom of the carton and place at the sides of the carton. Wrap cups, mugs, bowls etc and place in the centre of the plates.
  • Cutlery should be wrapped in small bundles with wrapping paper, all sharp knives facing the same way.
  • Jugs, teapots and items with handles should always have extra padding and packed upright in the carton.
  • Do not overfill cartons or leave items protruding from the top, as this will make them harder to handle and may cause risk of damages within the carton.
  • Do not make cartons heavy ( remember once the removal men have gone, you will have to carry them yourself)
  • Cartons which contain breakable items should always be marked “FRAGILE’’

 Bedding

  • Linen and bedding that is still being used, should be packed in black plastic bags on the morning of the move.

Wardrobes

  • The hanging garments in wardrobes should be left for the removal men to transport in wardrobe boxes on the day of the move. However if you are moving yourself a good way is to take approximately ten items on hangers and place a black bag over them and make a hole at the bottom of the bag for the hooks to go though and then tan place tape around the hooks to keep then all in place.

Irons, Fryers, Tea/Coffee Makers

  • Empty, drain all the contents away and dry out prior to the move.

Washing Machines & Dishwashers

  • Un-plumb and drain the day prior to the move.

Fridges and Freezers

Empty and drain the day before the move. It maybe an idea to dwindle down your freeze stock down to the minimum.

Cookers & Fires

  • Disconnect any gas or electric cookers and replace the fittings with the proper plugs and cups. You maybe wise to contact your local gas or electric company to disconnect your appliances.

Hi-Fi, DVD/Video and Computer Equipment

  • Hi-fi should have all cassettes and turn tables taped down and secured.
  • All discs should be removed the drawers, as you may have problems when you come to re-start your computer.

Lamp Shades

  • Once removed from their fittings, i.e. ceilings or table lamps, if they are breakables you should wrap them and mark then as Fragile, any plastic or linen shades should be placed into black bags.

Carpets

  • All tacks should be removed and the carpets should then be rolled up. You should try not to bend the carpet once rolled, as it will difficult to relay again.

Fuel Filled Items

  • These maybe items like paint, petrol canisters, gas bottles (full or emptied) or garden chemicals etc, should be emptied prior to the move and packed separately and marked CAUTION.
  • Please note we do not carry the above items, due to our insurance clause.

Now the Most Important Thing “The Kettle”

  • Do not pack the kettle, cups etc, as we have found though a survey that most removal men work much better and more efficiently when supplied with tea and coffee at regular intervals!

 Load Last Items

  • Items that you need immediately upon arrival at your new premises i.e.: Kettle, cups etc, these should be placed in a carton and marked “UNLOAD FIRST”
